Home Heating Help Available Now

My priority is ensuring residents have access to available supports. That includes sharing information about supports that can help households manage heating costs this winter through home heating help programs.

As we continue through the coldest months, I know that for many of you, the drop in temperature brings more than just a frost on the windows, it brings the worry of rising heating costs. Whether you’re filling an oil tank, buying wood, or watching the electric meter, the cost of keeping your home comfortable is a real burden on the monthly budget.

Home Heating Help and Support for Your Home

There is home heating help available right now for Nova Scotians who need a hand with their heating costs. The program provides a $400 rebate to eligible Nova Scotians to help offset home heating costs.

This support is available to both homeowners and renters. If you live alone and make $30,000 or less, or if you live in a household with a combined income of $45,000 or less, you are likely eligible. It also applies to anyone receiving Income Assistance or the Guaranteed Income Supplement.

The rebate applies to most common home heating sources, including: oil, electricity, wood, wood pellets, propane, or natural gas.

Why This Matters for Our Community

Access to heating support and home heating help can make a meaningful difference for many households. For households under financial strain, this support can help ease some of the pressure during the winter months.

If you’ve applied before, keep an eye on your mailbox or email, the province usually sends out reminders to previous applicants. If you’re new to this, my office is here to help you navigate the paperwork. If you need assistance with the application process, my constituency office can provide guidance and direct assistance. That’s what we’re here for and we’re happy to help.

If You Aren’t Eligible, There Are Still Options

Some residents may not meet the eligibility criteria but still be experiencing financial challenges. Maybe your income is slightly over the limit, but unexpected expenses or rising costs have left you short. If you are not eligible for the rebate, additional community-based home heating help may be available.

Additional support may be available through the following programs:

  • The Salvation Army HEAT Fund: This program offers emergency assistance for home heating. They understand that emergencies happen, and they are there to help bridge the gap.
  • The Seniors Care Grant: If you’re 65 or older, you might be eligible for up to $750 which can be used toward home heating, as well as things like small home repairs and grocery delivery. ()
  • HomeWarming: For long-term help, this program offers free energy efficiency upgrades (like insulation and draft-proofing) for income-qualified homeowners, which helps lower your bills every single month.
